Refuting the False Antinomian Gospel of Justification in Sin by Dead Faith

‘There is a whole system of false doctrine that goes like this:

1. You don’t need to repent of your sins to be saved. That would be salvation by works of the law.
 2. Because your sins have already been paid for on the cross. Jesus paid our debt. 
 3. You just need to believe that Jesus died for you, paying your debt.
 4. Then His righteousness is imputed to you and God thinks you are righteous.
 5. And you are now saved though you are still a sinner and continue to sin every day in word, thought, and deed.

You can see how one false doctrine leads to another. This is the counterfeit Christianity and false gospel of Satan. He is subtle and deceptive.

Here is why each of the 5 points is wrong:

1. You don’t need to repent of your sins to be saved. That would be salvation by works of the law.

False: Repentance is a change of mind, not a work. Peter said repent of this thy wickedness and pray that the thought of thine heart might be forgiven you. Repentance from sin is a precondition to forgiveness. Even in this antinomian system, you must repent of the sin of unbelief in order to be justified by faith. There is no escaping the fact that you must repent of sin to be saved.

2. Because your sins have already been paid for on the cross. Jesus paid our debt. 

False: If Jesus paid your debt you would be born saved and have no need of faith because your debt would have been paid before you were born and Jesus would have already paid for the sin of unbelief. The Bible says that Jesus paid our ransom, not debt. Big difference. The Bible says our debt is forgiven, which is impossible if it were paid.

3. You just need to believe that Jesus died for you, paying your debt.

False: The Bible says to repent and believe, not to believe only. The only time the Bible uses the expression “faith alone” is when it says that a man “is not justified by faith alone.” The faith that justifies is the same faith the sanctifies and purifies. Justifying faith is faith that results in obedience and faithful living. There is no justification in sin by dead faith.

4. Then His righteousness is imputed to you and God thinks you are righteous.

False: The Bible says that our faith is imputed as righteousness, not that Christ’s righteousness is imputed to us. God considers faith to be righteousness. By faith we are made actually righteous in our position and practice. Faith changes our character. Justification is not a mere declaration of being righteous but an experience whereby you actually become righteous by faith.

5. And you are now saved though you are still a sinner and continue to sin every day in word, thought, and deed.

False: Christians are saints, not sinners. We become new creatures in Christ. The old has past and all things are become new. A real Christian obeys God every day in word, thought, and deed. Daily rebellion is proof of being unregenerate. He that sins is of the devil.’
